How Are Prayer Times Calculated?

Islamic prayer times are calculated based on the position of the sun relative to the horizon. Each prayer has a specific astronomical definition:

  • Fajr: Begins at dawn, when the sky starts to lighten
  • Sunrise: When the sun first appears above the horizon
  • Dhuhr: When the sun crosses the meridian (highest point)
  • Asr: When the shadow of an object equals its length
  • Maghrib: At sunset, when the sun disappears below the horizon
  • Isha: When the twilight disappears
